Atomic Clocks and the Map in the Sky
High above us, satellites with perfect clocks are drumming out a beat — and your phone listens to find out exactly where you are.
The story
Here is a riddle. What falls from the sky all day and all night, cannot be seen, cannot be felt — and can tell you very nearly exactly where you are standing?
Give up? A drumbeat. A drumbeat made of radio.
High, high above us — much higher than any aeroplane — special navigation satellites are circling our whole planet. Together they drum their timed radio beats down over the whole world, over and over, far too fast for ears. Tchk-tchk-tchk. All day. All night. Wherever the sky is open above you, the beats are falling.
And in your grown-up's pocket, the phone is listening.
Now, how can a drumbeat tell you where you are? Try this game in your head. Imagine your friends stand far away in different corners of a big field, and they all clap at exactly the same moment. If one friend is close, her clap reaches you quickly. If another is far, his clap arrives a little late. Close friend, quick clap. Far friend, late clap. From how late each clap arrives... you could work out where you must be standing!
That is the phone's whole trick — except there are no real claps. The claps stand for the radio drumbeats, and the clapping friends are the satellites, those machines circling high above. Each satellite's beat carries a message: exactly when it was sent, and from where. The phone compares several beats, works out how far each one travelled, does its sums, and — pop — a little dot appears on the map. You are just about here — usually within a few steps of the truth.
But for the trick to work, every satellite has to keep almost perfect time. Not pretty-well — astonishingly well. If a satellite's clock drifted even a tiny, tiny bit, your dot would land in the neighbour's garden instead of your own.
So what keeps perfect time? Not a kitchen clock. Not even a fancy watch. Inside each satellite there is a very special clock that keeps time using atoms — among the tiniest building blocks of the everyday world. Atoms have an inner rhythm so steady that it barely changes at all — one of the most reliable beats people have ever found. The satellites borrow that beat for their drumming, and helpers on the ground keep checking the clocks and gently correcting them. That is why the beats arrive so wonderfully on time.
And think what those little dots on maps can do: lost hikers found in the fog, ships guided into harbour on the darkest night — all from listening to the sky's drumbeat and doing the sums.
Because here is the part I love most: people built a map with no ink and no paper. The map is made of TIME.
So the next time the phone says, in its calm little voice, turn left here — you will know the secret. Way up high, the satellites are drumming, kept perfect by their atomic clocks. Tchk-tchk-tchk. The sky is counting, softly, for you.
