Some stories begin with a rumble.

On a little island off the south coast of Iceland, one winter evening, the ground began to tremble — small shakes, easy to sleep through. Then, in the middle of the night, just past the last houses of the town, the ground cracked open — and fire came out. People woke to shouts and sirens.

Not fire like a candle. Melted rock, glowing orange, fountaining up out of the earth. A volcano was being born, right at the edge of town.

This was a fishing island — boats everywhere. In the dark, the boats became rescue ships, and nearly everyone sailed safely to the mainland.

But some people stayed. Firefighters. Scientists. Helpers. Because the island had one more precious thing to lose: the harbour. The calm, protected water where all the fishing boats come home. Without the harbour, fishing would become terribly hard — and fishing was how the whole town lived.

And the melted rock — the lava — was creeping straight toward the harbour's mouth. Slowly, slowly, like thick glowing porridge, burning and burying everything it touched. If it sealed the harbour shut, the boats might never come home to it again.

How do you stop a creeping wall of fire? It seemed impossible. You cannot push it. You cannot build a fence, because fences burn.

Then a scientist named Þorbjörn had an idea that sounded much too simple. Cool it down.

Here is his thinking. When something hot and gooey cools, it goes hard — think of melted chocolate: warm, it flows; cool, it sets. Lava is the same. Cold, it turns to stone — and stone stays put.

And what did the island have more of than anything in the world? Cold seawater. A whole ocean of it, right there.

So they pumped. They aimed hoses and pumps at the glowing edge of the lava, day and night, and even a dredging ship joined in, spraying seawater from the harbour. SSSSSS! Clouds of steam rose where cold sea met hot rock. Pipes broke, and they mended them. Machines failed, and they repaired them. Bigger pumps arrived from far away. People took turns, rested, and went back out. Nobody could do the whole job. Everybody could do their piece.

And little by little... it worked. Where the water sprayed, the glowing orange edge went dark and hard. The seawater sank into the cracks and cooled the lava deep down, until thick parts of the flow set into stubborn stone. The creeping slowed. And the harbour mouth — stayed open.

When the volcano finally went quiet, families sailed home, dug the ash away — and found the harbour waiting. The boats came home to it. The town lived. The volcano still stands at the edge of town today, dark and quiet, and you can walk right up it.

So when someone tells you a problem is too big, think of the island that fought a volcano with seawater. Big problems are beaten a bucket at a time — by people who each did their piece, and did not stop.
