The Girl Who Sold Lemonade for the Bees

The story

When Mikaila was four years old, she was stung by a bee. And then, in the very same week... she was stung AGAIN. Two stings in one week! She was frightened of bees after that, and who could blame her?

But Mikaila's family did something clever. Instead of just saying 'poor you', they said: why not find out about the little creature that scared you? So Mikaila learned about bees. And the more she learned, the more her fear turned into amazement. Bees pollinate the plants that become our fruit and nuts and vegetables — so much of what we eat needs them. And bees were in trouble, with fewer and fewer in many places. The creature that stung her... was a creature the whole world needed.

Right around then, her family encouraged her to enter children's business fairs. She needed something to sell. And her family had a treasure: her great-grandmother's old recipe for lemonade, made special with flaxseed. Mikaila had an idea that joined everything together. She would make the lemonade sweet — with HONEY, from bees. She would sell it at a little stand. And she would give part of the money to groups that protect bees.
