The Invisible Line in the Sea

Alfred Wallace noticed that two neighbouring islands had strikingly different animals, and drew an invisible line in the sea where the animal worlds change.

Here is a puzzle about two islands. In Indonesia there are two islands called Bali and Lombok, and they are neighbours. They sit so close together that from one, you can see the other across the water.

So you would expect the same animals on both. Right?

Wrong. And that is the mystery. More than a hundred and fifty years ago, a scientist named Alfred Wallace spent years travelling through the vast island region that includes Bali and Lombok, collecting beetles and birds and watching everything with enormous care. On Bali he found busy Asian birds, like the woodpeckers and barbets he knew from the big islands to the west. But when he crossed to Lombok, those particular birds were nowhere to be found. Instead he met cockatoos and honeyeaters, birds whose relatives live far away in Australia. Two neighbouring islands, two strikingly different collections of animals.

And Wallace realised the difference was not just Bali and Lombok. It ran on and on through the sea, island after island. To the west, the animals were mostly Asian kinds. To the east, more and more of the animals had Australian relatives, mixed with strange creatures found nowhere else on Earth. So he drew a line on the map, right through the water, to show where the mix of animals changes most sharply. Scientists still call it the Wallace Line. It is invisible. There is no fence and no wall. And yet, for ages upon ages, many kinds of animals have not crossed it.

Why not? The answer is hiding under the water. Around Bali and the big islands to the west, wide stretches of sea are shallow. Long ago, in the cold ages of the Earth, so much water was frozen into ice that the sea level dropped, and those shallow seas dried into land. Islands joined up like puzzle pieces, and animals simply walked between them. Monkeys walked. Elephants walked. Whole forests of creatures spread from island to island on dry ground.

But between Bali and Lombok, the sea floor plunges DEEP, like a canyon full of water. Even in those ice ages, when the oceans dropped, that deep channel stayed sea. No bridge of land appeared there. So the walking animals were stopped, age after age, by a strip of deep water, though a hardy few still found ways across. And many forest birds, though they can fly, dislike flying over open sea, so plenty of Asian forest birds, including the very woodpeckers and barbets Wallace had seen on Bali, never made the crossing.

Wallace could not see the bottom of the sea. But by watching animals patiently, he found the shape of a drowned world, a map of ancient land hidden under the waves.

So the next time you visit a beach, remember the Wallace Line, and remember what careful noticing can do. The water may look the same in every direction. But someone who pays close attention, the way Alfred Wallace did, can find an invisible line in the sea that tells a story from the deep past.
