The story

This is a story about a road. Not a road on the ground. A road in the sky — one that only opens once in a very, very long time.

First, you need to know how the planets move. They all go around the Sun, like children running around a playground — but the far-away ones move slowly, and the near ones move fast. So most of the time, the giant planets are scattered all over the sky, nowhere near each other.

But once in a great while — about once in 176 years, which is longer than anybody lives — the giant planets swing round to positions that work like stepping stones — Jupiter, then Saturn, then the ones beyond, each one reachable from the last.

Now, why would anyone care about that?

Because of a wonderful trick. When a spaceship flies close past a big planet, the planet's pull can sling it onward — faster than before, like a playground roundabout giving you a push as you run past. Scientists call it a gravity assist — remember that name, gravity assist — though I'll mostly call it what it feels like: a free ride.

So picture it. Stepping stones, all in a line. A spaceship could hop to the first giant planet, get a push... fly on to the next one, get another push... and another... and go farther than anything had ever gone. One road trip, four giant worlds.

And who noticed the road was about to open? A young helper at the space laboratory — a student doing sums about how planets move. His careful sums showed it plain: the lineup was coming. Miss it, and everyone would wait another lifetime and more.

The space planners were determined not to miss it.

So people built two tough little spaceships, called Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, and sent them off down the once-in-176-years road. Past Jupiter — a gravity-assist push. Past Saturn — another push. Voyager 2 kept going, on past the cold blue giants at the very edge, the first visitor they had ever had.

The pictures came home like postcards from the deep dark: swirling storms bigger than our whole planet, golden rings, icy moons no one had ever seen up close.

And here is the part that gives me a shiver, in a good way. The trick worked because the sums were right. People worked out, years ahead, exactly where each planet would be — and promised the spaceships would meet them there. And every single time, without fail, the planets kept the appointment.

The Voyagers never came back. They were never meant to. They are still out there right now, farther than anything people have ever made — because someone was paying attention while the once-in-176-years road stood open, and because arithmetic, done carefully, can carry you right out of this world.
